New homes are needed for 70 animals rescued by the RSPCA in Sussex on Christmas Eve after they were found living in poor conditions with a family who were unable to care for them properly.

Three dogs, 30 cats, 35 birds and two rats were removed from a house in Bexhill, East Sussex, during the afternoon of Wednesday, 24 December 2008.

The animals were taken to the RSPCA Brighton Animal Centre in Patcham, where staff worked until late evening to get them fed and comfortable.

RSPCA Sussex Chief Inspector Patrick Hamby said: "We received a call from someone concerned about the animals and when we arrived we found out that the owners were disabled and unable to look after them.

"We are treating this as a welfare issue and are not looking to prosecute the owners."

Homes and food now needed for the 70 animals
All of the animals are now in need of new homes. The three dogs are a Staffordshire bull terrier, a Jack Russell terrier and a Yorkshire terrier, and the birds include budgies, lovebirds and chickens.

Brighton Animal Centre manager, Jenny Wells, said: "We are hoping that people will come forward and offer homes to our festive arrivals.

"We are also appealing for food for the animals, so if anyone would like to donate some, we would be very grateful."
